I switched baby formulas on my almost 3 month old. Unfortunately, she is extremely constipated. She screams everytime she tries to poo, and only manages to squeeze out a little pellat. It’s heart wrenching.
Is it possible that it’s just the switch of formula’s, or is it most likely the new formula? I would jump back to the old formula in a heart beat, but I’m afraid that if it’s the switch, and I switch it again, I’ll have her little belly all messed up. Please help!

I had the same problem but i continued with the formula as lets face it they’re pretty much all the same. You need to get her to drink water!!! Just make up a bottle of boiled cooled water and every 10 to 20 mins get her to take a little suck…by the end of today she will have hopefully drank 5 or so ozs and this will help her poo…do the same every day…dont try to get her to drink it all at once cause she wont but a little suck every now and then and problem solved.
it probably is due to the switch. if it’s been more than 48 hours since she’s had a real bowel movement then i would make an appt to have her seen, especially since she’s so young.
if she seems like she’s in pain then i would call your on-call pediatrician to see if they want her to be evaluated in the emergency room. anytime your baby seems to be in pain-you should always call your dr.
otherwise, just continue using the new formula until you can talk to or see the dr. switching her again might make the situation worse.
try giving her 2-4 oz of water in addition to her formula feeds each day. if this doesn’t seem to help, you can also try giving her 2-4oz of juice (apple, grape, prune). this will help add extra liquid to her digestive tract, which will soften her stool.
you can also try using glycerin suppositories. these are safe, non-medicated sticks of glycerin (that will dissolve and be absorbed by your baby’s bloodstream-i used them on my kids) that you can insert into her rectum to help her have a bowel movement. they help attract water to her intestines which will make the stool softer and easier for her to pass.
DON’T give her corn syrup (such as Karo brand), liquid laxitives, or enemas. these types of things are not designed for babies and they can actually cause her harm.
i hope she feels better soon!!
It could be the change. However I had 2 babies that suffered with constipation, which I have been told is common.Try talking to a Pharmacist they have something called Maltagen that you can add to her bottle.Dont feel guilty.
Its the formula, its a normal reaction to the change, the baby is fine!!!
Yes, any change in formula is going to cause constipation and gas. You can try using Mylicon (it is a gas relief for infants and works wonders). I also had to start putting a little oatmeal for added fiber into my sons bottles about this time, because he had this same problem.
You can also use DARK Kyro (corn syrup), it will help move things along.
overall formula is believed to constipate children. but i guess it is the new formula that has not suited him. switch back to the old one.
you answered your own question.. yes she is constipated. if you want to switch her formula, gradually do it by mixing both into one bottle, and the one that you want her to drink more of.. put more of that formula in the bottle and less of the other , day by day… don’t do too much at one time..
I would contact your daughter pediatrician…Not only to check on your child, but also to see about the formulas
