My 6 months old daughter is constipated. We called the doctor and they suggested Prune Juice. She doesn’t like the Prune Juice and it’s really difficult to get her drink even 1 ounce. She seems to like Prunes in the baby food form. Applesauce is what “stopped” her up and the doctor said to steer clear of that, carrots, and bananas until she’s normal again. Other than prunes/prune juice, what else can we give her? We just started her on stage 1 foods on her 6 months birthday and we don’t want to completely stop feeding her solids but we definately want her feeling better and back to normal a.s.a.p.

Massage your baby’s belly. Measure three finger-widths below her navel and apply gentle but firm pressure with your fingertips. Press until you feel a firmness or mass. Maintain gentle but constant pressure for about three minutes.
• If you feed your baby formula, ask her doctor about switching to a different brand. Some babies are less constipated on soy formula. And sometimes adding a teaspoon of Karo corn syrup to the formula also does the trick.
• Switch from rice cereal to barley or oat cereal, or add fruits or vegetables to her regular cereal, once your baby is ready for them.
• ask her doctor if you can boost her fiber intake by adding a teaspoon of bran to her cereal. Cut down on constipating foods like rice, bananas, and cooked carrots, and try mixing her cereal with a little bit of apple or prune juice or a few tablespoons of pureed prunes, apricots, or pears to help loosen her bowel movements.
• Increase the amount of fluid your baby drinks to help keep her stools soft. start by giving her 1 ounce of prune juice diluted with 1 ounce of water, twice a day. As her constipation improves, you can cut back.
When my daughter was constipated, I mixed the prune juice with formula because she wouldn’t drink it otherwise. That worked well.
With my son, lots of pears (baby food in a jar, I mean) always worked. My doctor had said pear juice could also work. It’s hard to find, but if you have a Whole Foods near you, you should be able to find it in the baby food section — Earth’s Best brand.
i use apple with prune baby food or prune apple juice mixed with water..we have the same problem
I found the best thing was a small amount of corn syrup in the milk. It usually ran through them within an hour to clean out the pipes!
My neice and nephew get horribly consitpated. They have been this way since birth. It’s horrible the pain they go through.
Their doctor started them on a program of a Tablespoon of mineral oil in their bottle once a day. It works and they don’t seem to mind the taste.
Applesauce has too much fiber (I know, doesn’t sound possible) but try apple juice to help loosen her up.
Best thing to try first is a bottle of Karo Syrup and water. I give it to my son when he is stopped up.
DID YOU TRY DILUTING THE PRUNE JUICE WITH SOME WATER? MAYBE TRY SOME APPLE JUICE TOO, THEY ALWAYS WORKED FOR MY DAUGHTER.
pears, peaches, water is good too. green beans, spinach, peas, broccoli. just think about what makes you poop!
Apple juice! Seams strange that it would do the opposite of apple sauce. It worked wonders for many children in my care. Don’t water it down. I use 8 oz when the baby is hungry. This young I would stay away from citrus juice. They can cause other digestion problems.
I would stick with just prunes to help with de-constipating her. I would have thought that with just one serving of prunes, it would have done the trick? Water is also good for this. DON’T give her anything like whole-grain, bran, etc. She is too young to be eating any foods like that. The prunes really should work here soon!!!
Try giving her cheerio’s they are whole grain which helps with a bowel movement, give her high fiber foods and plenty to drink, water if she’ll drink it.
Once we started feeding my daughter solids she went from having a bowel movement 3 or 4 times a day to just one or two. Also instead of being very soft, it was more solid.
If you are breastfeeding at all, breastmilk is the best thing to get things regulated again.
Maybe she needs a little plain water with her solids. Do NOT add sugar or suryp or anything like that to her water.
Does she eat cereal? Baby cereal, especally rice, is notoriously constipating (though it was never a problem for my ds).
At this point it would not hurt at all to stop all solids for a few days to a week until her pooping is back to normal.
The nurse that comes for weekly visits to my home told me that if you need something to help with constipation, mix 1 part apple juice with 3 parts water throughout the day and that should help.
my mom is a nurse and when I had that same problem with my daughter she told me to try kayro syrup in water. Just fill a bottle with water and put two tablespoons of kayro syrup. Try this about three times a day for about a week and see if it helps. It took my daughter a couple weeks but eventually became regular. Keep trying the prunes.
Fresh orange juice with water. Always worked for my kids and they liked the taste.
Pears, peaches, green beans, peas, all are good with fiber.
For my son, pears always seemed to work-more gentle on his system than the prunes also.
Check the back label of the baby food-choose one thats higher than 1 gram of fiber in it. Also, don’t feed her rice cereal. Oatmeal cereal is less binding and if you want, mix it with warmed prune juice instead of formula/breastmilk. That works now for my little guy and he gobbles it right up.
Also-try a warm bath and then exercise her legs to help move it out. Good luck
buy “little tummies laxitives” theyll work in like 2 hours. its a liquid form and then there are supoositories. and it doesnt take much moe than a couple of drops as far as babyfood..the only thing i know of is prunes
I give my daughter prune juice and apple juice. I also try givong her the prune baby food.
“P” foods/juices -
peaches
pears
prunes
I had the same with my 6-months old son; I stopped feeding him with any new food, I just came back to breastfeeding for two weeks, and in a mean time I gave him as much tea (a tea for babies) as he wanted to drink between feedings.
